PRESERVING &
DOCUMENTING
THE ROMAN SITE
OF DOUGGA
CAPTURING DOUGGA,
TUNISIA’S
ROMAN LEGACY
At GEOBILITY, we combine historical preservation with cutting-edge technology to safeguard cultural heritage sites like Dougga, the largest Roman settlement in Africa. Located a day’s journey from Tunisia’s capital and near the iconic landscapes used in the original Star Wars trilogy, Dougga is a UNESCO World Heritage site brimming with architectural marvels. Our mission was clear: capture the grandeur of Dougga while ensuring the integrity of every ancient stone and inscription for future generations.
In Dougga, we brought an arsenal of high-precision tools, optimized for cultural heritage preservation. Over four intensive days, our team of six experts meticulously documented key landmarks, including the iconic amphitheater, the Temple of Apollo, the triumphal arch, and several residential sites. Equipped with terrestrial LiDAR scanners, 360-degree imaging systems, and specially calibrated photography tools, we recorded every facet of these ancient structures. Although Tunisian regulations prevented drone usage, we employed alternative methods to capture aerial perspectives, ensuring no detail was left undocumented.
PROTECT AND PRESERVE CULTURAL HERITAGE SITES WITH DIGITAL PRECISION.
Comprehensive Analysis and Virtual Access
Back at our headquarters, the collected data was carefully processed to create an immersive digital twin of Dougga. This dataset allows for an interactive, virtual exploration of the site, where users can examine intricate architectural details and annotations without impacting the physical integrity of the ruins. Our digital model provides scholars, preservationists, and the public with web-accessible, collaborative tools for in-depth research and education.
Here, we meticulously captured the grandeur of the amphitheater and the elegance of ancient temples. Additionally, our expertise extends to safeguarding historical treasures like opera houses, churches, and medieval castles.
MINUTE DETAILS
CAREFULLY
RECONSTRUCTED
Adhering to the highest standards of cultural heritage documentation, our non-contact recording methods ensured that even the smallest details were faithfully preserved.
Utilizing multi-spectral imaging and ground-penetrating radar, we uncovered hidden structures and intricacies beneath the surface, providing insights into Dougga’s historical layers that go beyond what’s visible to the naked eye.
A QUEST TO
PRESERVE
OUR LEGACY
Dougga stands as a testament to the richness of Roman architecture and culture in Africa, and GEOBILITY’s work ensures that its legacy is both protected and accessible. This project is not only a technical achievement but also a tribute to the significance of Dougga’s history and a bridge connecting past, present, and future.
